In August, Sarah and Sam of Chisholm Clarke had the privilege of hosting the 'What a Lawyer Fireside' panel discussion at the New Zealand Law Society’s New Lawyers Conference at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. The conference brought together young professionals, creating space to share stories, spark conversations, and connect the next generation of legal talent.

What made the panel especially powerful was the variety of backgrounds represented. From private practice and education to the independent bar, each panellist has taken a different pathway – showing new lawyers that there isn’t just one way to build a fulfilling legal career.
They spoke candidly about the highs and lows, the lessons learned along the way, and the opportunities ahead for young lawyers in New Zealand. From navigating career pivots to managing client demands, the discussion struck a balance between practical advice and personal reflection.
Co-hosted by Sarah Wilson and Sam Lindsay from Chisholm Clarke, the session encouraged authentic and open conversation. The room was packed with new lawyers, eager to hear the stories behind the roles and to gain a realistic view of life in the profession.
The atmosphere was warm, engaging, and at times, full of laughter – a true reflection of our mission at Chisholm Clarke: to make legal careers less daunting and more human.
